WWE Rumors: Shawn Michaels vs. AJ Styles Not Being Planned
AJ Styles vs. Shawn Michaels may not be in the cards just yet for WWE Royal Rumble.
The potential AJ Styles vs. Shawn Michaels match has made the wrestling headlines in the latter part of the week. This started with an unconfirmed rumor from Four3Four.com that this match had been in the works, and continued with Styles being asked about facing HBK. He stayed positive, saying he would “love the opportunity” and “man, what a match that would be”.
To only further things, Styles took to Twitter to troll fans over facing Michaels at WWE Royal Rumble 2017. He posted a fan-created photo of him and the former D-Generation X leader facing off in front of San Antonio, which will host the Royal Rumble at the Alamodome.

With all the speculation and teases, it’s probably worth knowing whether WWE is actually planning this match for the end of January. Well, according to PW Insider, there is no word on Styles vs. Michaels being planned.
This isn’t surprising. The original rumor started as something unverified and seemed a little far-fetched to be happening anyway. Michaels is 51-years-old and has stated before he’s done wrestling. He wants to honor the retirement match he had with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26. However, if fans are looking for any hope, he has made a few appearances since and even played a physical role at WrestleMania 32, albeit for about two minutes.
There’s no doubt that Styles vs. Michaels would be a marquee selling point to the 2017 Royal Rumble. WWE needs to sell out 60,000 seats in the Alamodome, which may not be feasible with just the Rumble Match alone.
The Royal Rumble is about three months away, meaning there is still time for plans to potentially develop into something real. This match probably won’t happen, but if Goldberg can come back to WWE, then anything is possible, right?
