Mick Foley Taking a Break from Twitter After Fan Reveals Conversation

The Hardcore Legend, Mick Foley is taking a break from social media after a fan posted a private conversation on Twitter.

Oh, the internet. On the one hand, it can be a lush jungle of “LOLs”, giving us entertaining memes, hilarious stories about celebrity faux pas, and reminding us to bring out certain body parts in remembrance of a deceased great ape.

But there is a darker side of the internet, one where trolls lie in wait to strike at any vulnerable user and expose even their most benign of vulnerabilities. No more is this apparent than when a celebrity makes the mistake of interacting with us “normal folk” in hopes of having a heartfelt conversation about their respective industry. That’s what Mick Foley recently tried to do, and now he’s paying the price for it.

Foley’s first mistake was engaging in a DM (Direct Message) conversation with a guy who’s Twitter name is @drinkbleachT, aptly named for CM Punk’s suicide-themed insult he frequently hurls at online trolls. So this user started by saying that Summer Rae should get a bigger push on RAW. Foley took it upon himself to send a DM asking why this fan is ignoring the other talent currently on the roster. For one reason or another, Foley didn’t mention that Summer is injured, but instead took the position that WWE needs to focus on limiting women’s matches, lest they suffer another failed “Divas Revolution” experiment). He also questioned whether or not Summer could compete with women like Sasha Banks and Charlotte since they have more in-ring ability and experience. This is where the internet took over and took the conversation off the rails. Here’s the entire conversation:

I see what Foley is saying. First, he’s basing his comment about the women’s division on history. Doing too much too soon proved disastrous in 2015 and WWE needs to tread lightly to avoid these same mistakes. Second, he’s not insulting Summer; he’s being pragmatic. Summer is nowhere close in ability to Sasha or Charlotte, so why would she suddenly be thrust into a match with either of these women? It wouldn’t make any sense.

While fans will pick and choose sides based on how they interpret Foley’s words, the concern from WWE will be his discussion about inside baseball with a fan on social media. While kayfabe isn’t kept to the level it once was, there is still a reasonable expectation for the superstars (and authority figures) to follow the storylines both on and off television. Here, Foley is completely disregarding that persona and speaking as himself. Some people may find it refreshing, but I doubt any of those people work in Stamford, CT.

In my opinion, it was kind of a jerk move to post the discussion. Undoubtedly, this girl wanted to score brownie points with her friends by proving that she was having a private conversation with a WWE Hall of Famer. As a result of this posting, Mick has decided to step away from social media for awhile, which isn’t always a bad thing.

The internet is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
