Wisconsin-Green Bay beats Valpo to win title
Celeste Hoewisch and Lydia Bauer had 13 points apiece, and No. 17 Wisconsin-Green Bay wrapped up an outright Horizon League championship with a 75-48 win over Valparaiso on Thursday night.
Green Bay (26-1, 15-0) has won outright or shared the conference's regular-season crown for 13 consecutive years, the longest streak in the nation. The Phoenix celebrated by donning black shirts with the number 13.
''It's a pretty awesome moment,'' Hoewisch said. ''We've worked extremely hard so this was just one thing on our list that we get to check off and it feels really good.''
Julie Wojta had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Phoenix, recording her eighth double-double of the season.
''It gives us a physical dimension with Julie that we don't have,'' Green Bay coach Matt Bollant said. ''Something that's kind of special with our team, because we're so skilled, is now we've got a physical presence, someone that can really go get it.''
Green Bay made nine of its season-high 12 3-pointers in the first half and led 45-19 at the break.
''We come to the game looking to get the ball inside and today they really weren't guarding the 3 as well as we thought they would have maybe,'' Hoewisch said. ''We just take what the defense gives us.''
Reserve Stefanie Lange had 11 points and eight rebounds for Valparaiso (7-21, 4-12). Tabitha Gerardot finished with 10.
