No. 17 Arizona State women defeat No. 19 Cal 57-49 in Pac-12

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Sophie Brunner scored 16 points with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals as a balanced, 17th-ranked Arizona State built an early lead and held off No. 19 California 57-49 in a Pac-12 Conference opener Saturday night.

The Sun Devils (10-3, 1-0) built a 35-19 halftime lead and held on despite being outscored by Cal (9-3, 0-1) in both the third and fourth quarters.

Katie Hempen and Quinn Dornstauder played inside-outside for ASU, scoring 14 points apiece - Hempen on four 3-pointers and Dornstauder making 7 of 10 shots close to the basket. Arizona State had 20 assists on 25 made field goals.

Cal, led by Kristine Anigwe's 22 points, was hampered by 26 turnovers. ASU scored 20 points off the turnovers, and made 15 steals - Arnecia Hawkins led with five.

The game's start was moved up to avoid conflict with ASU's appearance in football's Cactus Bowl, which started at 8:15 PDT.
