UFC newcomer Brian Ortega tests positive for steroids

UFC fighter Brian Ortega returned a positive drug test following his bout against Mike De La Torre at last month's UFC Fight Night on FOX: Lawler vs. Brown card in San Jose, Calif.

According to California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster, who confirmed the news to FOX Sports on Friday, Ortega tested positive for the anabolic steroid drostanolone and has been suspended for nine months, fined $2500 and will have his win overturned to a no-contest. Sherdog.com was the first to report the results.

Ortega has 30 days to file an appeal.

The former Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion was expected to be a solid prospect coming into the UFC with an undefeated record training out of the Black House gym, which is the same camp responsible for former UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva and light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida.

Now Ortega's debut is marred with the positive drug test result, which will cost him his win, part of his purse and put him out of action for the rest of 2014.

Ortega's camp has not made a public statement yet on whether or not they will file an appeal with the commission over the drug test result.
