UFC Brasilia: Cyborg vs. Lansberg Results and Highlights

UFC Brasilia was a night full of interesting matchups and several upsets. Here’s a rundown of all the happenings of the night, with highlights and recaps for all the fights.

UFC Brasilia was another lap in the long run of weekly events the promotion is putting on. While the card only possessed one top-ten fighter (Jussier Formiga), the excitement was certainly there throughout the night.

Stunning upsets, massive cuts, huge knockouts, and back-and-forth brawls. The Brazilian crowd was treated to all that and more on Saturday night.

Below will be the results, followed by available highlights, and a brief recap of the fight.

Lina Lansberg did her best, but Cris Cyborg’s strength was too much for the newcomer to handle. Most of the Brazilian’s work was done in the clinch, where Cyborg consistently battered Lansberg with knees.

Cyborg also landed a pair of takedowns, and that’s where the young striker was outmatched. Lansberg did have an escape from top mount, but Cyborg finished the fight from a knee-on-belly position in the second round.

Now the talk of the town is whether or not the UFC should adopt a women’s featherweight division for Cyborg. Some say, “If you build it, they will come,” others say, “Women’s featherweight is a graveyard of talent.” For now though, Cyborg is 2-0 in the Octagon and the Invicta FC champion.

Renan Barao looked a bit like his old-self on Saturday. His counter-striking was excellent and still was able to show off the flashy techniques that made him one of the most dominant fighters in MMA.

Every time Nover seemingly thought about striking, Barao would hit him with several strikes. It was not a performance that should make Jose Aldo or Conor McGregor shake in their boots, but it was good to see Barao get back in the win column.

Roy Nelson recovered from his recent split decision loss with another brutal knockout victory. This time it was with an uppercut rather than his trademark overhand right. However, the strike that is getting the most attention from this bout is one that came after the bell.

Roy Nelson and Bigfoot Silva are good friends and have been acting cast-mates in the past. Nelson was not happy that he was forced to land follow-up punches to his unconscious friend, and made that known with a push kick to referee John McCarthy. Whether this lands him on the chopping block like Jason High when he shoved a referee is yet to be seen.

Nonetheless, Nelson needed this victory, and it might come at the expense of both his and Bigfoot Silva’s jobs.

It was a fun fight while it lasted. As usual, Paul Felder threw caution to the wind when boxing with the red-hot Francisco Trinaldo. The two traded blows with the Brazilian mixing in several takedown attempts.

The one takedown “Massanduraba” landed was the difference maker, as he was able to dice up Paul Felder on the ground, opening up a massive cut above the Pennsylvanian’s right eye. After Felder was patched up in between rounds, he was cut open again in the third and the doctor had seen enough. This was the seventh-straight victory for Trinaldo, and he will surely receive a ranked opponent in his next bout.

The most shocking result of the night came at the hands of Eric Spicely. The TUF veteran was the largest male underdog of the card with Santos coming in as an 8-1 favorite. The most shocking part of the fight is that it was not very competitive.

Spicely looked excellent on the ground, hitting an omoplata sweep from his guard to stand up early on. Then Spicely landed a takedown, went for a kimura, then took the back of the Brazilian as he attempted to stand up. From there, the rear-naked choke sunk in and the crowd was stunned.

This seemed like brutal matchmaking when the fight was announced, with Santos having four great knockouts in the UFC and a recent loss to Gegard Mousasi, while Eric Spicely was coming off a promotional debut defeat at the hands of Sam Alvey. Upsets like this are what make MMA betting so difficult.

This was the prototypical Godofredo Pepey fight. The Brazilian came out and immediately nailed De La Torre with a wheel kick, and from there he put on a show. Flying knees, spinning backfists, more unique kicks, Pepey pulled out his bag of tricks to finish this fight.

Eventually, he was able to take De La Torre’s back in the clinch and finished the fight with a great rear-naked choke.

UFC Brasilia Preliminary Results

Michel Prazeres refused to engage the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert on the mat, standing up immediately after all five takedowns he hit. Instead, he beat Gilbert Burns on the feet with his pressure-based heavy striking.

This fight was almost finished in the first round by a tight Rani Yahya arm triangle. Instead, fans received three rounds of close grappling exchanges. It was decided by the judges that Yahya had more dominant positions though.

In the only fight of the night with top-ten implications, Jussier Formiga did what he had to do and beat Dustin Ortiz with his grappling. Ortiz consistently boxed himself into a clinch with Formiga, and the Brazilian dominated from there.

What a wild “Fight of the Night” this was. Luan Chagas scored two knockdowns to Erick Silva’s one. However, in the third round, when both men were drained, a failed takedown attempt led to Chagas’ doom. Erick Silva literally walked backwards onto the back of Chagas after he failed a single-leg takedown and finished the rear-naked choke.

Alan Patrick displayed a rarely seen wrestling game in this one, landing five takedowns to control Stevie Ray over 15 minutes. The Scottish lightweight found some success on the feet, but could not keep Patrick off of him.

It turns out the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace Vicente Luque can pack a punch. Urbina tried to establish some distance striking early on, but Luque forced him backwards with haymaykers, and put Urbina to sleep with a beautiful right hand. Look out welterweight division.

Former NCAA Wrestling Champion Gregor Gillespie used his grappling in his UFC debut to dominate Glaico Franca over three rounds. Gillespie looked fairly one-dimensional, but mixed together straight punches and feints with his takedowns several times that make the future look promising for the Long Island native.
