UFC announces it will hold show in Maine for first time in August

The UFC is going to Maine.

UFC president Dana White announced Thursday on Twitter that the organization will hold its first show in the state Aug. 16 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. White graduated from high school in Maine and still owns a home in the New England state.

Maine legalized MMA in 2009. The Cross Insurance Center just opened back in September and can hold anywhere between 5,800 to 8,500. The Bangor card will be a UFC Fight Night and air on FOX Sports 1.

No fights have been scheduled yet, but former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown is a possibility to compete. Brown, a native of nearby Portland, Maine, has been focusing more on coaching at American Top Team right now, but told FOX Sports last week that he would love to fight in his home state if the UFC held a show there.

A long shot to be on the card is former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia. "The Maine-iac" is likely the most famous MMA fighter ever from the state and has been petitioning on social media to fight at the event. Sylvia has not fought in the UFC since 2008.
