Travis Browne talks legacies; Miesha Tate moves on in a post-Ronda Rousey world
The Great MMA Debate podcast covers a lot of ground this week including previews of both the TUF Nations Finale card as well as the FOX UFC Saturday show from Orlando as well as guests Travis Browne, Miesha Tate and Brad Tavares all stopping by for interviews.
Browne is on the precipice of a title shot if he can get past Fabricio Werdum on Saturday night, but as excited as he is at the prospect of fighting for the UFC title, there are still bigger goals he has in mind.
First and foremost, Browne is a dad so he wants to make his kids proud, but beyond titles and beyond glory, the Hawaiian wants to leave behind a legacy that makes everyone look back at what he accomplished and say 'that was special'.
"In this sport, I want to leave a legacy," Browne said during the interview. "I want people to mention me 20 years, 30 years, 50 years from now as one of the guys that really changed the game and the sport. For me, to do that, it's not only about in the cage. I don't want people to only talk about how I was in the cage. I also want people to see what kind of a man I was. The measure of a man is not what he does for a living, it's how he is behind closed door and how he is with his family.
"My measure of success when I'm on my deathbed and I'm ready to go, is to see my family and my kids be successful. Winning the title and all this other stuff, it's just part of the road."
In the co-main event of the same card, Miesha Tate returns to action following her loss to Ronda Rousey late last year. It marked the second loss Tate suffered to Rousey in her career, effectively putting the chances of a third fight at slim to none.
It also doesn't help matters much that so long as Rousey is champion, Tate will likely be sitting on the outside looking in just hoping the title changes hands so she could get another crack at the belt.
For now, Tate's goals have to change just slightly because focusing on the championship while it's so obviously out of reach right now could be damaging to her career. Tate has every intention of getting back there one day, but she knows it's not now and it won't even be after this fight or probably even the next few.
Tate's mindset is eventually getting back to a title shot and hopefully even redeeming herself against Rousey. No matter how many times the UFC asks Tate to face her, she will always say yes.
"I think I have to (change my expectations)," Tate said. "I don't expect a quick turnaround. I don't think if I went out and knocked Liz (Carmouche) out in eight seconds or submitted her in one minute, that's not enough even in my book to say that I've earned another shot at the title. I think I need to go out there and put a string of wins together against the other top legitimate girls.
"There are ways for me to beat Ronda. I'll fight her as many times as the UFC will let me, and I will try to continue and improve every single fight and it starts with Liz on April 19."
