Rory MacDonald vs. Stephen Thompson to headline June 17 UFC on FS1 card in Ottawa
The UFC will return to Canada June 17, with an FS1 event to be headlined by a welterweight contender's bout between Rory MacDonald and Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson. The announcement of the event and leading bout was made Friday by the UFC.
MacDonald, from Quesnel, B.C., will get to fight nearer to home than usual, when he takes on the American Thompson in Ottawa. "Wonderboy" is currently riding one of the most impressive win-streaks in all of MMA, having won his last six bouts.
In his last outing, Thompson stopped former world champion Johny Hendricks in less than three rounds with his masterful takedown defense and precision stand-up striking. In his most recent fight, MacDonald challenged welterweight champion Robbie Lawler for the world title.
The two battled for five rounds in one of the most brutal, back-and-forth MMA fights, ever. Ultimately, MacDonald lost to Lawler, via KO, in the final round.
The TriStar fighter will look to rebound and prove that he still needs to be regarded as the top welterweight title challenger in the world. Thompson hopes to put an exclamation point on his statement that he's the contender who most deserves a title shot.
