Michael Bisping knows he's a better actor than Conor McGregor
Before Michael Bisping got the call to fight Luke Rockhold at UFC 199, he was on a movie set in Toronto alongside Vin Diesel for the upcoming film "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage".
The role was originally intended for UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who didn't end up taking the part so producers were forced to hold auditions while rewriting the character with a new actor in mind.
The person who ended up landing the part was Bisping, who made it clear that when it comes to on-screen performances, there's no contest between him and McGregor.
"I didn't replace Conor on the set. Conor didn't want the part, he was busy doing something else so they re-wrote the part, they held auditions and what can I say, I smashed it," Bisping told TMZ recently.
Weeks before the UFC 199 announcement came along, Bisping spoke to FOX Sports from the set of the movie where he expressed his enthusiasm for landing such a major role.
Bisping has starred in several other projects, but an action vehicle like the one starring Diesel could be a gateway to even bigger roles in the future.
"I've been kicking away for a little bit, but nothing on this scale ever. I went for the audition and you go for many auditions as an aspiring actor, but you go in, you try your best and then that's it you forget about it. If you get a call back, great. I went to the audition and forgot all about it," Bisping said.
"My agent called and he said 'I don't want to get your hopes up, but I think you got that part but before I confirm with them I need to know if you can leave on Sunday and you'll be gone about a month.' I said yeah, I'm sure I can figure it all out. A day later, I had to be on a plane that Sunday. It's a massive opportunity."
According to Bisping, his part was crafted after he landed the part and from the sound of things he'll definitely get some screen time when the movie is released.
"My character is a cool character," Bisping said. "He's a spy on a team with Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa and I'm having a lot of fun."
As far as the future goes, Bisping hopes to win the middleweight title on Saturday night with a win over Luke Rockhold but he hopes his career in Hollywood will blossom as well after "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage" lands in theaters.
In fact, Bisping says if the film is a success, he's quite sure he'll be returning for at least one of the sequels if not more.
"I know that this is a franchise movie and there's going to be more than one. I know my character is at least going to be in the second movie, that's for sure, if not the third," Bisping revealed. "So it's very, very exciting in that respect. Hopefully this will open the door to many more roles."
