Mein, Ponzinibbio paired for April UFC on FOX event in Orlando

The next UFC on FOX event is shaping up to be a monster.

Scheduled to take place at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, the April 19 card will be headlined by a heavyweight title eliminator bout between Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne and includes a pair of electric lightweight contests and the long awaited return of Thiago “Pitbull” Alves.

Thursday afternoon, UFC president Dana White announced another tilt to add to the event, as Ultimate Fighter: Brazil Season 2 standout Santiago Ponzinibbio will face off with Canadian prospect Jordan “Young Gun” Mein in welterweight action.

Ponzinibbio, who was replaced in the finale on Season 2 of TUF: Brazil after suffering a broken hand in his semifinal win over eventual winner Leo Santos, will be looking to rebound after losing to Ryan LaFlare in his UFC debut. After winning seven straight heading into the November match-up in Goiania, Brazil, the defeat dropped the 27-year-old Argentine’s record to 18-2 overall.

A native of Lethbridge, Alberta, Mein earned an impressive first-round stoppage win over veteran Dan Miller in his UFC debut last March. Five weeks later, the 23-year-old Canadian returned to the cage, suffering a technical knockout loss at the hands of surging contender Matt Brown in a contest that garnered Fight of the Night honors despite lasting just six minutes.
