Lana Lansberg on Cyborg's weight cut: 'That's her problem'

Lana Lansberg doesn’t care about Cris Cyborg’s weight cut issues.

Weight cutting is a major part of combat sports, but it’s especially prevalent in mixed martial arts. Cris “Cyborg” Justino has always had issues making weight, but her cuts down to 140 pounds seem to grow increasingly detrimental. Her opponent for UFC Fight Night 95, Lana Lansberg, has no sympathy toward her Brazilian opponent as the deadline for weight cutting approaches.

“That’s her problem,” Lansberg said while being interviewed by Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting. “I have signed a contract for 140 pounds and I will fight at 140 pounds. She’s a professional and I think that she will make weight. Otherwise, that’s her problem.”

For Cyborg, this cut has been a big problem. Coming into this week, many reports were developing that Cyborg was anywhere near 20-30 pounds over the weight. Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting took to Twitter on Thursday to report that the Invicta featherweight champion is still ten pounds over the expected weight.

To make the situation even worse for Cyborg, another report from Cruz on Thursday presented the idea that she may not be allowed the standard one-pound weight allowance for non-title bouts since this is a special catchweight fight at 140 pounds.

“Yea that’s her problem. She’s been doing this for years. That’s part of the game. To win a fight, you have to make weight. She has known that for months.”

Cyborg’s last fight at 140 pounds was against Leslie Smith, where Cyborg won via a first-round TKO. One of the biggest stories from that bout was the video that appeared in a documentary showing Cyborg in tears trying to make weight before the fight. It was a telling look into the struggles that she’s faced trying to make weight throughout her mixed martial arts career.
