Eddie Alvarez explains what went wrong against Conor McGregor

Eddie Alvarez never imagined that Conor McGregor could knock him down, much less put him away in less than two rounds.

Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened as McGregor out struck Alvarez in a lopsided margin while landing three knockdowns that precipitated the end of the fight while also costing the Philadelphia native his lightweight championship.

According to Alvarez, who spoke with FOX Sports after the fights, he just didn't stick to the game plan set up by his coaches and that's ultimately what cost him in the bout with McGregor.

"Disappointed. I didn't fight a good fight. I went in with a plan, didn't stick to the plan, I think I paid for it," Alvarez said.

"I think (the game plan) was more to kick and wrestle, not to box so much, not to throw so many hands. Kind of got lulled a bit into his game and paid for it."

According to FightMetric, McGregor out landed Alvarez by a staggering margin of 32 to 9 in significant strikes. Some might even wonder where those nine strikes landed for Alvarez, considering he never mounted any significant offense against McGregor on the feet.

Alvarez seems to agree with that assessment considering he barely remembers the original knockdown that put him on the floor in round one and the entire fight just went downhill from there.

"The shot he hit me with, yeah, I think I threw a shot and he came over top cause I don't even remember, I just remember being on the floor and I was like wow that was quick," Alvarez said. "Whatever that was it was fast. I didn't feel like it hurt me crazy.

"It's kind of a flash and I've been there before. So I was OK with it, but I just boxed too much, boxed too much tonight. Too much boxing."

Alvarez has an extensive background with boxing, especially after adding coach Mark Henry to his team recently, but it all backfired on him Saturday night.

As far as what comes next, Alvarez isn't ready to speculate just yet.

The disappointing outing against McGregor clearly left him shaken and so Alvarez is just looking forward to some time at home with his family before making a decision on his next bout in the UFC.

"It's too soon to tell," Alvarez said about his return to action. "I'm going to go home, see my wife and kids, I've been busy this year. Busy for my own career and I just want to see my wife and kids."
