Diego Brandao released from UFC following arrest for assault

Former "Ultimate Fighter" winner Diego Brandao has been released from the UFC just weeks after he was arrested following an alleged assault at a strip club in New Mexico.

Sources confirmed Brandao's release to FOX Sports on Thursday following an initial report from Sherdog.com.

Brandao was taken into custody on Friday, April 15 after allegedly getting into an altercation with security at a strip club before the fighter was accused of pistol-whipping an employee and pointing the weapon at others.

Brandao was arrested on charges that included aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault.

Brandao is also awaiting word on a potential suspension he faces after testing positive for marijuana following his last fight against Brian Ortega at UFC 195 in January.

Brandao debuted in the UFC after winning "The Ultimate Fighter" season 14. The Brazilian amassed a 6-4 record overall in the UFC before his release this week.
