Daniel Kelly beats Patrick Walsh in sloppy standup bout
Daniel Kelly earned a unanimous decision over Patrick Walsh in a bout that resulted in a sloppy boxing match over the course of three rounds on Saturday night.
The two fighters are best known for having good ground games and instead engaged in an ugly standup fight for three rounds, much to the chagrin of a restless Broomfield, Colorado, crowd.
Walsh, who was a wrestler at Ohio State, seemed determined to swing as many big hooks as possible as he looked to take Kelly's head off. Kelly, a four-time Olympian in judo, didn't even bother attempting a takedown and instead opted to chase Walsh around the Octagon looking for some kind of combination.
Walsh appeared to land the better power punches, but couldn't hurt Kelly with anything he was throwing. Kelly was content staying in the pocket and countering whenever Walsh would open up.
Over the course of 15 minutes, Walsh attempted one half-hearted takedown attempt, and, outside of that moment, both men were happy to engage in a boxing matchup with minimal kicks being thrown as well.
Kelly had the better volume over three rounds while Walsh was winging the power punches, although without a ton of success.
The judges scored the fight 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27, all in favor of the Australian, Kelly.
