Dana White is shipping up to Boston with new boxing series 'The Fighters'

Dana White may best be known to mixed martial arts fans as the president of the UFC, but before he ever heard of the Octagon, he was a mainstay of the boxing scene in his hometown of Boston.

It's there that White's fighting roots took hold as he became an amateur boxer and trainer and his passion for the sport exceeded his love of any other competition out there until he discovered MMA a few years later.

White eventually left Boston after a dispute with men connected to recently convicted mob boss James 'Whitey' Bulger and that's how he ended up in Las Vegas where he eventually connected with childhood friends Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta and the trio ended up purchasing the UFC.  Now White will go home again with his first love in combat sports as he focuses on rejuvenating the boxing scene in Boston.

A new series titled 'The Fighters' will head to the Discovery Channel in 2014 with White and Craig Piligian, the current executive producer on The Ultimate Fighter, leading the show focusing on the death and rebirth of the boxing scene in Boston.

The trailer for the show features Boston stalwart Peter Welch, who most UFC fans should recognize as the longtime boxing trainer of fighters such as Kenny Florian and Jorge Rivera, as he tries to reinvigorate the sport of boxing in Beantown.

With a soundtrack blaring from hometown boys The Dropkick Murphys and their track 'The Boys are Back', the Boston boxing scene will come alive again with this new reality show.

Piligian Films will oversee the project with White serving as an executive producer on the series.  There is no date or time when 'The Fighters' will debut, but it's expected to land on the small screen at some point in 2014.
