Carlos Condit to undergo surgery on Friday, return timetable TBD

Carlos Condit will undergo surgery to repair his damaged right knee on Friday, his manager Malki Kawa told FOX Sports on Wednesday.

Condit suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and partially torn meniscus during his UFC 171 fight with Tyron Woodley on March 15, doctors recently confirmed.

The former interim UFC welterweight champion, currently ranked No. 3 in the division, has not yet been given a return timetable, though surgeons will offer more clarity on the issue after completing his procedure, Kawa said.

Most likely, however, the repair is likely to keep him out of action for months, and possibly for the rest of 2014. For most athletes, the standard recovery timetable is between 6-10 months, depending on how they respond to physical rehabilitation.

Condit's injury occurred in the second round of his fight, when he was kicked in the left leg but pivoted on his right, causing the latter leg to give out. He immediately fell to the ground and the fight was stopped. Prior to that, however, he had grimaced in pain during a takedown in an apparent precursor to the injury.

Mixed martial arts' most well-known ACL recovery story was former champion Georges St-Pierre, who took 11 months between surgery and his next fight, which ironically came against Condit in Nov. 2012.

Other past UFC fighters including Alessio Sakara and Kurt Pellegrino have returned to compete again in as little as nine months.

Condit, who turns 30 next month, has a career record of 29-8. He joins a host of UFC fighters on the sidelines with torn ACL's, including Rashad Evans, Conor McGregor and Julianna Pena.
