Cain Velasquez will face winner of Werdum vs. Browne in Mexico if healthy
UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will find his next opponent on Saturday when Fabricio Werdum meets Travis Browne in the main event of FOX UFC Saturday in Orlando, but now he even knows where the fight will take place.
UFC president Dana White let slip during the FOX UFC Saturday pre-fight press conference on Thursday that plans are in place for the promotion to finally take a show to Mexico with Velasquez headlining against either Werdum or Browne.
"The winner of this fight will fight Cain Velasquez in Mexico, assuming Cain's recovery is on schedule," White said letting the cat out of the bag.
Velasquez is currently recovering from shoulder surgery that put him out of action for a big chunk of 2014, but all signs are pointing towards a return to action late this year. The card in Mexico is currently rumored to take place in November, so there's no reason as of now to believe he won't be ready in time for the date.
The UFC has long planned a show in Mexico, but it was always about putting on the right timing with the correct fight card. Velasquez is already a huge star in Mexico, and having him headline the first show there always seemed to be the plan for the UFC.
Now all that stands in their way is a delay with Velasquez's recovery, but otherwise the UFC will land south of the border later this year with a heavyweight title fight on tap to headline.
