Anthony Pettis wants to cement his legacy at UFC 206
At UFC 206, Anthony Pettis will seek to become a two-time UFC world champion by defeating the formidable Max Holloway.
At UFC 206, Anthony Pettis will face Max Holloway for the interim featherweight title. This Saturday at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Pettis seeks his second UFC title. At UFC 164, the 29-year-old faced an old rival in Benson Henderson to secure his first championship belt with the largest mixed martial arts organization in the world.
Since then, however, his record has been quite checkered, going 3-3 in his last six fights. He lost three straight fights at lightweight before venturing down to featherweight and submitting perennial contender Charles Oliveira at UFC on Fox 21.
Now, Pettis has the opportunity to obtain a milestone that has only been held by three other men—become a two-division world champion. This feat is currently held by Randy Couture, B.J. Penn, and Conor McGregor. In a UFC promotional video, Pettis stated:
“I’ve put together a great team. I know what this means to Milwaukee. I was already a lightweight world champion. To be a two-time world champion in the UFC is that much more…it’s my legacy.”
However, Pettis will be facing an even younger Holloway (25) who currently enjoys a nine-fight win streak. He boasts wins over Ricardo Lamas, Jeremy Stephens, Charles Oliveira and Cub Swanson, respectively. The Hawaii native is a versatile fighter and is the No. 2-ranked featherweight in the UFC.
In a recent interview with the L.A. Times, Holloway commented on his work ethic, with hopes that it will pay off this Saturday night.
“Man, hard work and dedication … I believe in the old-school ways that if you want something, you go out and get it. You prove it. Nothing was handed to me. Tune in [Saturday]. You’ll see how hard work pays off.”
The winner between Pettis and Holloway will face Jose Aldo for the undisputed featherweight title at a not-yet-scheduled date in 2017.
