Alistair Overeem punishes Roy Nelson with body shots to win at UFC 185
Alistair Overeem threw everything but the kitchen sink at Roy Nelson over three rounds, and while he didn't get the finish, the Dutch kickboxer still walked away with a dominant, unanimous-decision win at UFC 185 on Saturday night in Dallas.
Following an up-and-down career thus far in the UFC, Overeem revamped his training by working with coach Greg Jackson and his team in New Mexico, and the results have shown thus far through three fights.
Overeem put together a masterful game plan highlighted by a barrage of jumping knee strikes that constantly battered Nelson to the body. The former K-1 kickboxing champion followed those up with some vicious body kicks that had Nelson wincing and his midsection turning three different colors of red.
Nelson refused to back down and continuously came after Overeem with his hard punches over all 15 minutes, but he just couldn't find the opening to land the perfect shot to end the fight.
Overeem's attacks stayed consistent in each round, and when it was over, the judges agreed that he did more than enough to win, with 30-27 scores returned in his favor.
"He hits very hard. He's very dangerous, he's very well-rounded. I had to be on my toes every second of every round," Overeem said.
Overeem picked up back-to-back wins for the first time in his UFC career and with a new team behind him, he said he's finally ready to make a run at the heavyweight title in 2015.
"I'm coming for that belt," Overeem said. "(Fabricio) Werdum or Cain (Velasquez), I'm coming."
