Young falls in Grand Prix Hassan II

Fifth-seeded Donald Young of the United States lost to Benoit Paire of France 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 Monday in the first round of the Grand Prix Hassan II. Eighth-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy was beaten by Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Paire held on after encountering trouble late in the second set. He saved two break points in the 11th game and trailed 4-2 in the tiebreaker. He will next play Germany's Matthias Bachinger or Italy's Filippo Volandri.

Garcia-Lopez defeated Fognini for the first time on clay and evened their head-to-head record at 2-2. The Italian had won both previous matches on clay, including in the third round of the French Open last year.

Garcia-Lopez advanced to the second round against Paul-Henri Mathieu of France or Moroccan wild card Mehdi Ziadi.

Igor Andreev of Russia defeated Albert Montanes of Spain 6-3, 6-3 and will meet Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.
