Wickmayer beats Schnyder in 3 sets at US Open

Fifteenth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer fought off a match point in the third-set tiebreak to beat Patty Schnyder in the third round of the U.S. Open.

Wickmayer, a semifinalist last year, won 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (6) on Saturday. The 53rd-ranked Schnyder double-faulted to end the match.

The 31-year-old Schnyder was the oldest remaining player in the women's draw.

Wickmayer, a 20-year-old Belgian, faces 31st-seeded Kaia Kanepi in the fourth round.
