The seven-time champion won the third set of his quarterfinal match on Centre Court 6-3 after losing the first two to the ninth-seeded Croat.
Cilic, who beat Federer in the 2014 U.S. Open semifinals, won the first two sets 7-6 (4), 6-4.

If Federer beats Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, he will equal Jimmy Connors' record of reaching the Wimbledon semifinals 11 times.
Federer is chasing a record eighth Wimbledon singles title. He's currently tied with Pete Sampras and 1880s player William Renshaw with seven.
The third-seeded Federer will be first up on Centre Court against Cilic, a Crotian who beat him in straight sets in their last meeting, in the 2014 U.S. Open semifinals.
Second up on Centre will be No. 2 Andy Murray, the 2013 champion, facing No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
