McHale, Zakopalova win at Open GDF

Eighth-seeded Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic beat Anabel Medina Garrigues 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 Monday in the first round of the Open GDF Suez.

Zakopalova needed 2 hours, 17 minutes to get the better of the Spaniard, who had won seven of their previous 10 matches.

Medina Garrigues did not face a break point in the first set and broke Zakopalova twice. But Zakopalova broke her twice in the second and then cruised in the third. She next faces either Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain or a qualifier in the second round.

Also, Christina McHale of the United States broke Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier's serve four times in a 6-4, 6-1 win to set up a second-round match against No. 3 Marion Bartoli of France. Mona Barthel of Germany also advanced with a 7-6 (1), 6-0 win against Urszula Radwanska of Poland and next faces either fifth-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy or Simona Halep of Romania.
