Mattek-Sands of US loses twice at French Open

Bethanie Mattek-Sands didn't have the best of days at the French Open on Friday, losing in singles and doubles and bleeding from a blister on her right ring finger.

''I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that are having worse days than me,'' the American said, ''so I can't complain too much.''

Mattek-Sands lost her third-round singles match to 10th-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2, 6-2. Then she and Meghann Shaughnessy, who were seeded sixth, were eliminated 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (6) by Julia Goerges and Andrea Petkovic of Germany in the second round of doubles.

Mattek-Sands' exit leaves one U.S. woman in the tournament, Vania King. She'll play No. 9 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the third round Saturday.

While playing Jankovic, Mattek-Sands had to deal with a bit of a distraction.

''I ripped open my finger and it was actually bleeding,'' said Mattek-Sands, who was treated by a trainer during the second set. ''I was getting some blood on my grip and everything.''

She made 30 unforced errors, 20 more than Jankovic, a semifinalist at Roland Garros three of the last four years. Jankovic - who broke Mattek-Sands twice in each set and didn't face a break point - next plays defending champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

Wearing eyeblack strips with a downward curl under her eyes to help with the glare, Mattek-Sands became the first U.S. woman other than Serena or Venus Williams to reach the French Open's third round since 2006.
