Lleyton Hewitt to play Davis Cup doubles for Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Australia team captain Lleyton Hewitt has come out of a short-lived retirement to replace Sam Groth in Davis Cup doubles against the United States at Kooyong on Saturday.

Hewitt, who last played at the Australian Open in January before retiring, will link with John Peers to take on Bob and Mike Bryan.

The countries are 1-1 in the World Group first-round tie after Australian No.1 Bernard Tomic and John Isner won their singles on Friday. The American beat Groth and Tomic defeated Jack Sock.

The match began Saturday as the International Tennis Federation admitted that the weekend matches should have been played on hardcourts, not grass.

It said the confusion came from a three-way ''oversight'' by the ITF, the United States Tennis Association and Tennis Australia over a 1999 agreement.
