Dimitrov moves on and will face Nikoloz Basilashvili in a semifinals match.
Basilashvili did the impossible, upsetting Dominic Thiem in straight sets to advance to a quarterfinals match. Thiem, the world No. 8, is off to a rocky start so far in 2017.
In his quarterfinals match against Martin Kližan, Basilashvili rallied, winning the second two sets to advance. He won the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-3. The world No. 87 looks to continue his string of strong play at the Sofia Open against local favorite Dimitrov.
The Bulgarian must contend with some competitive players if he is to reach a finals appearance.
Still alive at the tournament is defending champion Roberto Bautista Agut and his next opponent, David Goffin. The two face one another in a semifinals match. Goffin is the world No. 11 and highest remaining seeded player at the tournament after Thiem’s loss.
Stay tuned to see if Grigor Dimitrov can advance at the 2017 Sofia Open.
