Flavia Pennetta announces retirement after her U.S. Open win

Flavia Pennetta dropped another big piece of news as she accepted her trophy as the first-ever Italian to win the U.S. Open.

"This is the way I would like to say goodbye to tennis," Pennetta, 33, announced during her celebration ceremony with Robin Roberts. The 26-seed revealed she had been thinking about this for the last month.

"I couldn't finish a better way," said Pennetta, the oldest woman in the Open era to become a Grand Slam champion for the first time. "I'm really happy going out with this big trophy home."

Pennetta thanked her coach, her family, and the crowd during her speech. "You've goven me a lot of emotion, and I love you guys."

And with a record $3.3 million dollar check and U.S. Open title? Not a shabby way to go.
