Davis Cup: Australia extends quarterfinal with doubles win

DARWIN, Australia (AP) Australia has stayed alive in its Davis Cup quarterfinal against Kazakhstan by winning Saturday's doubles match to trail 2-1 going into Sunday's reverse singles.

Behind 2-0 after Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios lost their singles matches on Friday, Australia needed victory from Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth to avoid swift elimination, and they duly beat Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

On Sunday, Kyrgios will play Mikhail Kukushkin and Kokkinakis is scheduled to take on Nedovyesov.

On Friday on grass at the Marrara Sports Complex, Nedovyesov beat Australian No. 1 Kyrgios in four close sets while Kukushkin comfortably defeated Kokkinakis.

Kazakhstan, which has been competing in Davis Cup as an independent nation since 1995, is attempting to advance to the semifinals for the first time.
