World Cup 2022 highlights: Costa Rica upsets Japan late, 1-0
Sunday marks the start of the second week of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and we've got you covered from start to finish with every must-see moment! Costa Rica began the day by upsetting Japan, winning 1-0 at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar, to stay alive in Group E.
Keysher Fuller put Costa Rica on the board in the 81st minute after Japan was in control for much of the match. Japan had multiple opportunities in the second half to get on the board, but it failed to capitalize on all of them. Both teams now have three points entering the final match of group play.

Here are the top plays.
Setting the stage
Japan entered the match aiming for consecutive World Cup victories for first time since 2002 after topping Germany 2-1 in its tournament opener Wednesday.
On the other side, Costa Rica was looking to bounce back after a crushing 7-0 loss to Spain earlier this week.
48': Japan waking up
Wataru Endo went for it all and tried to score the game's first goal, but Francisco Calvo got his leg in front to help keep Japan off the board.
Takuma Asano attempted a header off the rebound, and that was saved by Keylor Navas.
63': Japan fails to capitalize on golden chance
Japan was awarded a free kick right outside the box, giving it a great chance to score the game's first goal. However, Yuki Soma's shot sailed over the net and the match remained scoreless.
70': Japan nearly gets a penalty kick
Calvo committed a bad foul for Costa Rica on a potential scoring chance for Japan. He slid into Junya Ito just a bit behind the entry line of the box, giving Japan another free kick from that area.
72': Japan still can't capitalize on free kicks
Following the yellow card, Daichi Kamada took the free kick from right outside the box. Costa Rica's wall was effective though and blocked the shot. Soma got the rebound, but his shot was blocked, too.
81': Costa Rica scores!
After being quiet for the entire second half and much of the match, Costa Rica might have kept its World Cup hopes alive when Keysher Fuller connected off a pass from Yeltsin Tejeda, scoring a goal from the top of the box. Fuller's shot went past an outstretched Shuichi Gonda to make it 1-0 on Costa Rica's first shot on goal in the match.

88': Chaos in front of the net nearly allows Japan to tie it up
Now battling to get a point, Japan was able to create traffic in front of the net. However, Kamada's shot was saved by Navas and Costa Rica eventually regained possession after some deflections in the box.
