Women's World Cup group results: Round of 16 is set

With the third and final matches of the group stage now underway, the permutations for teams trying to advance at the 2023 Women's World Cup are countless.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP SCENARIOS

GROUP A

  • Switzerland — wins Group A with five points and advances to the Round of 16, going 1-2-0 (W-D-L); will play Spain in Round of 16.
  • Norway — advances to the Round of 16 as runner-up in the group with four points, going 1-1-1; will play Japan in Round of 16.
  • New Zealand — finishes third in the group with four points and is eliminated due to trailing Norway in goal differential, went 1-1-1.
  • Philippines — finishes last in the group with three points and is eliminated, went 1-0-2.

GROUP B

  • Australia — wins Group B with six points and advances to the Round of 16, going 2-0-1 (W-D-L); will play Denmark in Round of 16.
  • Nigeria — advances to the Round of 16 as runner-up in the group with five points, going 1-2-0; will play England in Round of 16.
  • Canada — finishes third in the group with four points and is eliminated, went 1-1-1; became first reigning Olympic Champion to not advance to the knockout stage in the following women's World Cup.
  • Ireland — finishes last in the group with one point and is eliminated, went 0-1-2; recorded its first point at a major tournament with its draw against Nigeria.

GROUP C

  • Japan — wins Group C with nine points and advances to the Round of 16, going 3-0-0 (W-D-L); will play Norway in the Round of 16.
  • Spain — advances to the Round of 16 as runner-up in the group with six points, going 2-0-1; will play Switzerland in the Round of 16.
  • Zambia — finishes third in the group with three points and is eliminated, went 1-0-2 and recorded its first ever win in the World Cup (men's or women's) in its last group match vs Costa Rica.
  • Costa Rica — finishes last in the group with zero points and is eliminated, lost all three matches it played.

GROUP D

  • England — wins Group D with nine points and advances to the Round of 16, going 3-0-0 (W-D-L); will play Nigeria in Round of 16.
  • Denmark — advances to the Round of 16 as runner-up in the group with six points, going 2-0-1; will play Australia in Round of 16.
  • China — finishes third in the group with three points and is eliminated, went 1-0-2; this is China's first time not advancing to the knockout stage in eight women's World Cup appearances.
  • Haiti — finishes last in the group with zero points and is eliminated, lost all three matches it played.

GROUP E

  • Netherlands — wins Group E with seven points and advances to the Round of 16, going 2-1-0 (W-D-L); will play South Africa in Round of 16.
  • USA — advances to the Round of 16 as runner-up in the group with five points, going 1-2-0; will play Sweden in Round of 16.
  • Portugal — finishes third in the group with four points and is eliminated, went 1-1-1 and recorded its first win all-time in the women's World Cup.
  • Vietnam — finishes last in the group with zero points, losing all three of its matches in its World Cup debut (men's or women's).

GROUP F

  • France — wins Group F with seven points and advances to the Round of 16, going 2-1-0 (W-D-L); will play Morocco in Round of 16.
  • Jamaica — advances to the Round of 16 as runner-up in the group with five points, going 1-2-0; will play Colombia in Round of 16.
  • Brazil — finishes third in the group with four points, going 1-1-1; this is the first time since the 1995 women's World Cup that it did not advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.
  • Panama — finishes last in the group with zero points, losing all three of its matches; scored three goals in its last group match vs France.

GROUP G

  • Sweden — wins Group G with nine points and advances to the Round of 16, going 3-0-0 (W-D-L); will play USA in Round of 16.
  • South Africa — advances to the Round of 16 as runner-up in the group with four points, going 1-1-1; will play Netherlands in the Round of 16.
  • Italy — finishes third in the group with three points and is eliminated, went 1-0-2; this was its first time not recording at least four points in the group stage in four women's World Cup appearances.
  • Argentina — finishes last in the group with one point, went 0-1-2; has yet to record a win in twelve women's World Cup matches, going 0-3-9 all-time.

GROUP H

  • Colombia — wins Group H with six points and advances to the Round of 16, going 2-0-1 (W-D-L); will play Jamaica in the Round of 16.
  • Morocco — advances to the Round of 16 as runner-up in the group with six points, behind Colombia due to lower goal differential; went 2-0-1 and will play France in the Round of 16.
  • Germany — finished third in the group with four points and is eliminated, went 1-1-1; this is the first time in women's World Cup history that Germany does not advance to the knockout stage. 
  • South Korea —  finishes last in the group with one point, went 0-1-2; have only won once in three women's World Cup matches all-time.
