What happened the last time Newcastle played Norwich?
Newcastle United play Norwich City at home on Wednesday in the Championship – but what happened the last time they met?
Back in April 2016 the Canaries and the Magpies were dueling it out to avoid the drop down to the British second tier.
It was a vital fixture, which didn’t do the home side any good in the end but helped to dash United’s hopes of avoiding relegation.
The Tyneside outfit had previously thrashed Alex Neil’s team 6-2 at St. James’ Park earlier in the season and now Norwich were out for revenge.
But the Carrow Road outfit would shock the Magpies during the return leg – in which their defending was blasted by the press.
The result would prove to be on of the nails in the coffin of the team and although Rafa Benitez had been installed in charge he couldn’t prevent a loss.

Writing in the Chronicle, Lee Ryder said of the result: “Benitez has changed a lot of things at St James’ Park in a short time, but the Spaniard can’t turn a squad that are woefully short of cover and quality into world beaters overnight.”
City opened the scoring through their Janaury signing Timm Klose, who makes our combined XI of the two sides for the game on Wednesday.
Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic then grabbed one goal back to level up the scores and give Newcastle hope of getting something out of the game.
This lasted a matter of minutes as Dieumerci Mbokani managed to ghost his way through the Toon defence and slam the ball past Karl Darlow in goal.
Mitrovic then scored from a penalty kick on the 86th minute and Magpie fans all around the globe thought that had rescued a point. They were wrong.
The defence had been the weakness for that team all season and Norwich left-back Martin Olsson scored in the 90th minute to win it for the home side.
