Watch Lionel Messi score to pass Raul for most goals in the UCL group stage
Lionel Messi is no stranger to scoring goals at breaking records, so it was only a matter of time until he scored and broke (cue D.J. Khaled voice) another one. Tuesday's must-see match of the Champions League featured Manchester City and Barcelona, the two favorites to advance out of Group C.
It was around the 20th minute when Barcelona broke on the counter attack and Messi made this end-to-end run to open up the scoring.
Clinically done. That goal on the end of the counter gave Messi 54 goals in the Champions League group stage, surpassing Raul's mark of 53. Of course, a certain somebody named Cristiano Ronaldo plays on Wednesday, and he has 51 group stage goals. Safe to say he'll eventually get past Raul and into second. It'll be another matter to see if he's able to surpass Messi.
No matter what happens, both players will still have two more group stage matches in this Champions League cycle alone to add to their tallies. Factor in all the other Champions League group stage matches they're expected to play in, and we've got ourselves and Messi vs. Ronaldo race.
