Twente defender Douglas banned for 6 matches
FC Twente defender Douglas has been suspended for six matches from the Dutch league for bumping into the referee after being sent off in his team's 2-1 loss at AZ Alkmaar.
The ban comes after Twente announced it was suspending Douglas for five matches, imposing the maximum possible fine and ordering him to carry out community service.
Douglas was sent off for hitting AZ midfielder Pontus Wernbloom on Sunday. The defender protested furiously and bumped into referee Ruud Bossen as his teammates tried to restrain him.
Douglas said Monday he accepted the punishment ''because I brought the club into disrepute.''
The ban comes at a critical time for Twente, which is second in the Eredivisie, three points behind PSV Eindhoven.
