Tottenham's Hugo Lloris: The Result Isn't Enough

Tottenham captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris comments on how winning by one goal isn’t enough.

A 2-1 scoreline which saw Tottenham clinch second in the league standings by the end of September should be hailed as a big achievement considering how early it is in the season.

But for Hugo Lloris, winning by one goal isn’t enough. Coming from a defensive player, the 29-year-old does have a point in that Spurs’ offense should be scoring more goals with the amount of chances they created.

Obviously losing Harry Kane who has been the main source of Spurs’ goals the past two seasons will make things difficult, but Lloris knows that a 2-0 lead in the Premier League could easily disappear.

“We know where we want to be at the end of the season and we work hard every day for that,” Hugo Lloris said (via Spurs’ official site).

“It’s the way we enjoy football – to win is to do the job. It’s true that today we had a good performance but the result is not enough, we should have scored one or two more goals, especially in the first half.”

“In the Premier League we know it’s difficult to have full control at 2-0 up and today was the perfect example.”

“We conceded the goal from the free-kick and at 2-1 you don’t know, do you attack? Do you defend? Their crowd was pushing but defensively we were very strong because we didn’t concede a lot of chances, so that’s positive.”

Despite saying that the final scoreline wasn’t enough because Spurs should have score more than two goals, Lloris is happy that they earned a win.

“We take a lot of risks in the way we play, we create a lot of chances and at the end, I think we showed more maturity and saw the game out and as we prepare for the Champions League again, it’s a perfect result.”

At the same time, Hugo Lloris isn’t the only one who thought Tottenham should have had a commanding lead in the game.

Not surprising, it’s another defensive player in Toby Alderweireld who feels that Spurs’ offense could help out the defense a bit more by making things easier in the second half.

“We have to be more clinical and if you want to be a top team you need to finish those chances and finish the game,” Alderweireld said.

“Of course, they got a goal back from a set-piece but I still had the feeling defensively everything was good, I never had a feeling they were going to score again, they had two attempts on target, so the organisation was good.”

“Our build-up play was good but we have to score more so we can make the second half easier!”

Both Lloris and Alderweireld do bring up a great point that Spurs’ finishing must be better especially with Harry Kane out for at least two months.

Against stiffer competition in the Premier League and Champions League, not being able to score with the amount of chances that Spurs constantly create will no doubt cost Tottenham in both competitions.
