Suarez gives Uruguay win over France
Uruguay secured a much-needed victory before World Cup qualifying with a 1-0 friendly win versus France at Montevideo on Wednesday night.
Though the French dominated the first half, Liverpool forward Luis Suarez grabbed the winner after coming in as a second half substitute for Uruguay's Diego Forlan, slotting home Maxi Pereira's clever through ball past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda in the 49th minute.
Suarez, who's been the center of a potential move away from Anfield this summer, will miss Uruguay's crucial World Cup qualifier against Venezuela on Tuesday through suspension. The South American nation currently sits in sixth place in CONMEBOL's nine-nation group with 13 points from 11 matches, two points behind group rivals Chile and Venezuela.
The top four teams in CONMEBOL's group stage will advance to next summer's World Cup finals. The fifth-placed team in the group will enter a playoff against an Asian opponent in November.
France, who will resume their South American tour on Sunday against World Cup hosts Brazil, reside in second place behind defending champion Spain in UEFA's Group I with 10 points from 5 matches respectively.
