Spurs get good news on Harry Kane, Toby Alderweireld injuries

Tottenham Hotspur expect to have Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld back soon. That's good news for a club that needs the duo on the field, arguably more than any other two players on the team.

Kane has been out since hurting his ankle against Sunderland on September 18 and was originally ruled out for eight weeks, but Mauricio Pochettino said that he would be back in training this week. The striker won't be in the team for Spurs' Champions league clash with Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, but he could be back in the frame for their Premier League match on the weekend.

Spurs have done well with Kane out, scoring more than two goals per match with him out. But aside from their win over Manchester City, Tottenham have had a relatively easy slate of matches in Kane's absence. With matches against Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool and Arsenal in the next month, getting him back soon will be vital.

It's still unclear when Alderweireld will be back, but the knee injury he suffered on Saturday against West Brom isn't overly serious. The club said he didn't suffer ligament damage and that he would be out weeks, not months.

Pochettino said that he would use Eric Dier in Alderweireld's place for now. Dier has some issues at centerback, having turned himself into an excellent defensive midfielder because of his shortcomings in the back line, but he's adequate in defense. He'll be next to Jan Vertonghen, which he's done before, with Pochettino deciding that he'd rather use Dier than Kevin Wimmer of Cameron Carter-Vickers.

At least that's Pochettino's immediate plan. As the matches pile up, he may turn to Wimmer or Carter-Vickers too, but he'll be hoping that Alderweireld will be back by the time Spurs play Bayer Leverkusen again on November 2, or at least against Arsenal four days later.
