Spector added to USA roster for Peru and Brazil
United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann added Birmingham City defender Jonathan Spector to his squad for the friendlies against Peru and Brazil on Tuesday.
Spector returns to the American setup for the first time since featuring as an unused substitute in the 2-0 defeat to Ukraine in March 2014. His arrival increases the squad to 24 players ahead of the date against Peru at RFK Stadium on Friday (live, 7:00p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports Go).
The versatile defender, 29, hopes to earn his first cap for the national team since playing in the 1-0 victory over Italy on Feb. 29, 2012.
Spector provides Klinsmann with more options in the fullback areas as he attempts to compensate for the recent injuries suffered by DaMarcus Beasley, Timothy Chandler and Fabian Johnson.
Klinsmann named Atlas left back Greg Garza and recent Sunderland loan signing DeAndre Yedlin in his initial 23-man squad as potential options, while other players in the squad -- including Geoff Cameron and Tim Ream -- also featured for their clubs at fullback at one point or another.
Spector is a natural center back by trade, but he features occasionally on the right or the left for Birmingham City. The former Manchester United youth product is a regular pick for City manager Gary Rowett. He joins the camp after playing 90 minutes in central defense during the 2-0 victory at MK Dons on Saturday.
