Sociedad beats Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in Basque Country derby

MADRID (AP) — Mikel Oyarzabal converted penalty kicks in both halves as Real Sociedad defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in the Basque Country derby in the Spanish league on Friday.

It was the second straight win for Sociedad against its rival, and the first at Athletic's San Mames Stadium since the 2015-16 season.

Sociedad, playing without several regular starters, hadn't won its last two league matches and was coming off a 1-0 home loss to Valencia, which had yet to win this season.

Athletic hasn't won since the first round and was coming off drawing with Barcelona 1-1 at Camp Nou Stadium.

Oyarzabal opened the scoring by converting a first-half penalty and Iker Muniain equalized two minutes later. Luca Sangalli put Sociedad ahead again straight after halftime, and Oyarzabal closed the scoring with another shot from the spot.

Sociedad moved to eighth in the standings. Athletic dropped to 16th.
