Saunders to speak with Wolves

League One Doncaster have confirmed that they have given Dean Saunders permission to speak to Wolves about their managerial vacancy.

Wolves fired Stale Solbakken after Saturday's 1-0 FA Cup loss to Blue Square Premier side Luton and have moved quickly in an attempt to land Saunders as his replacement.

Doncaster are enjoying a fine campaign under Saunders and lie second in League One but, while they are hopeful he will stay on, they will not block the former Wales international if he wishes to leave.

A statement on Sunday read: "Doncaster Rovers can confirm that they received an official approach from Wolves this morning to speak to Dean Saunders regarding their vacant position.

"The Rovers board will not stand in the way of Dean but will try to keep him at Rovers. Dean has been given permission to speak to Wolves and he is meeting them today.

"The board have a strategy for a situation such as this and have a 'Plan B' in place. We will keep everyone updated as we find out more."

While Doncaster are thriving, Wolves have been struggling under Solbakken and their FA Cup exit followed a poor run of league form, which has seen them slip to 18th in the Championship.

Saunders, who numbered Derby, Liverpool and Aston Villa among his clubs during his playing days as a prolific forward, became a coach upon his retirement.

After stints with Bradford, Blackburn, Newcastle and Wales he took his first managerial post at Wrexham, before taking charge at Doncaster in September 2011.
