Santander opts for Miguel Angel Portugal as coach
Racing Santander has appointed Miguel Angel Portugal as coach for the second time, replacing the fired Juan Carlos Mandia.
Portugal will take over immediately and lead the club Saturday against Real Madrid.
After guiding Santander to a 10th-place finish during the 2006-07 season, the 54-year-old Portugal moved to a job as technical secretary at Madrid, where he remained until the end of June.
Santander fired Mandia after a 2-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao on Nov. 8 that left it winless in eight games overall and 17th in the Spanish league standings.
