Rooney sorry for breaking fan's wrist

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney was looking to make amends Thursday after learning one of his wayward warmup shots broke a young fan's wrist.

Nine-year-old Jamie Thomas suffered the injury prior to United kicking off against Wolves at Molineux in central England Sunday.

The young United fan -- taking in his first live match -- was struck by one of Rooney's venomous blasts while sitting in the front row behind a goal.

"The players were warming up and Rooney and (Javier) Hernandez were taking a few shots," Thomas' father, Andy Thomas, told the Shropshire Star.

"Rooney missed one and it was coming straight towards Jamie so he put out his hands to stop it hitting him and it broke his wrist."

The England international was unaware he had injured anyone ahead of United's 5-0 win and has since promised Thomas a signed United jersey.

"I want to apologise to Jamie Thomas, I have arranged for a letter and a signed shirt to be sent to his home address #getwellsoon," Rooney wrote on his Twitter account Thursday.

Andy Thomas said he did not initially realize the severity of his son's injury.

"At first we thought it was just bruising but Jamie wasn't enjoying the game so we went to first aid. We ended up missing most of the second half."

The young fan will now be the envy of his classmates, however, receiving not only a personalized gift from England's star striker, but also an invitation from Wolves to sit in on the club's training.
