Robin van Persie volley vs. Aston Villa voted best goal in Premier League history

Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie's exquisite first-time volley against Aston Villa in April 2013 has been voted the best-ever goal of the Premier League era.

Van Persie received the award at a Legends of Football event in London, celebrating 25 seasons of Premier League football. Attended by EPL legends like Ryan Giggs, Michael Owen and Alan Shearer, the event helps raise money for charity Nordoff Robins, with the Premier League also donating £100,000 to the cause.

Voted on by players who had scored more than 100 goals in the division, van Persie spoke of his pride in winning the award: "It's a huge honour. Especially because it is picked by players from the hardest league in the world.

"With a goal like that you don't even think about what will happen, just make the most of it and see what happens. It takes a bit of courage as you don't know what's going to happen."

The charity event raised £404,000 for Nordoff Robbins, which makes specialist use of music to facilitate physical and emotional wellbeing for hundreds of people with disabilities. More than £7million has been raised in total from past events.
