Palmeiras fan in serious condition after being attacked by Santos supporters in Brazil

SAO PAULO -- A Palmeiras fan has been hospitalized in a serious condition after being attacked by Santos supporters following the teams' match in the final of the Sao Paulo state championship at the weekend.

Authorities said Tuesday the 25-year-old fan is in an intensive care unit because of the injuries sustained after Palmeiras defeated Santos 1-0 in the first leg of the state final on Sunday.

Claudio Morais is believed to be a member of one of Palmeiras' biggest fan groups, but he was with a group of friends far from the team's Allianz Parque when he ran into the rival supporters. Morais reportedly was wearing the fan group's jersey at the time of the attack.

Cases of fan violence are common in Brazil and usually are linked to fan groups.
