Ossie Ardiles Comments on Tottenham's Newest Signings

Ossie Ardiles has given his verdict on Tottenham’s deadline day deals.

Following Tottenham’s quick start to the transfer window by adding a striker and a defensive midfielder, Spurs wouldn’t sign other players until deadline day.

Delays in Georges-Kévin N’Koudou and Pau López’ deals stemmed from the fact that both Olympique Marseille and Espanyol needed replacements lined up.

Although in Marseille’s case it was much complicated than expected.

A hierarchy change led to a drawn out process when a deal had already been agreed upon, after word got out that Spurs had shown interest in the France Under-21 international.

With Clinton N’Jie joining Marseille on a season-long loan and Roberto signing for Espanyol from Olympiacos, Spurs managed to get two young and talented players.

The last player Tottenham would sign was Moussa Sissoko. In total, Daniel Levy spent £68.8 million to help beef up Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

And according to Ossie Ardiles, the former Spurs midfielder was delighted with the club’s moves on deadline day.

The word “exciting” is what the 64-year-old called the five new players who signed this summer.

In each position, there is competition that will push the starters to keep their jobs.

This in turn gives the backups more looks as possible candidates to rotate when Spurs are faced with fixture congestion during the season.

Up top, Vincent Janssen has already made the jump from the Eredivisie to the Premier League with ease after a month of training and pre-season under his belt.

The Dutch striker has led Tottenham’s attack when paired up with Harry Kane to provide a formidable one-two punch.

At central midfield, the additions of Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko gives Eric Dier and Mousa Dembélé plenty of competition to keep their place in the starting XI.

On any given matchday, Dier and Dembélé is the starting holding mid and central mid pair in Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

But with Wanyama and Sissoko on the squad now, they will fight for a starting spot throughout the season while offering some extra power and aggressiveness to this side.

As for Georges-Kévin N’Kouodu and Pau López, they could be considered wild cards.

N’Koudou and López will need time to adapt to the rigors of the Premier League, but once they do, Spurs could see an immediate impact.

At 21, N’Koudou is still young but has experience playing in a top division. The same can be said of López.

Because Érik Lamela is the only out-and-out winger on the squad, it was imperative to get a backup who can help out. Georges-Kévin N’Koudou offers that as he can play on both the left and right flanks.

The French winger’s pace will help add another attacking threat to a squad that needs more of it. This move could also shift Christian Eriksen back inside as a central attacking midfielder and rotate with Dele Alli.

As for Pau López, he’ll get some playing time once the League Cup begins.

The competition at this level should be more than enough to get the Spaniard’s feet wet while Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm rotate between the Premier League and Champions League.

Although Spurs had a lull in the transfer window for the second consecutive season, they managed to address the positions they needed help in.
