Newcastle United signing Christian Atsu on what he can bring to the team

Newcastle United signed Christian Atsu on transfer deadline day to a loan deal that could be made permanent. Christian Atsu has vowed to make an impact and excite fans.

I love it when new players come out and say what they want to achieve at the club. Looking at what Atsu has said, he sounds pretty confident that he’ll bring great success to the club. But let’s face it, we can’t be sure until he steps foot on the pitch.

Many of his statements seemed to reflect only how good he thinks he is. Such as:

“I am quick and very good when I’m one on one, which is my strongest point.”

“I can also create chances for the strikers and others to score.”

But here is the thing with Christian Atsu. He has been more than untested in English football. The most football he played in England were five league matches with Everton back in 2014-2015. He played more European football that season than English football.

Perhaps the issue with Atsu was that he never had a chance to stand out because he went to clubs that needed mere substitutes rather than starting wingers. Newcastle United could be a good change of pace for a player who, at 24, has had little first-team experience.

Like most players who have arrived at Newcastle over the summer, he spoke about promotion.

“We want to win each and every game but at the back of our minds we want to win promotion.”

It’s typical for new guys to discuss promotion as their biggest concern. It should be, after all.

Atsu nearly completed a transfer to Levante last season but instead was loaned to Malaga in January. If he can impress Newcastle United throughout the season, the club will have the option to buy. For Atsu, this means more than anything, and if he fails, you can trust Benitez will find someone else in January.
