Newcastle sign winger Florian Thauvin from Marseille

NEWCASTLE, England -- Newcastle has signed winger Florian Thauvin from Marseille as the Premier League club's fifth addition of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old Frenchman agreed to a five-year contract Wednesday, while Marseille took Remy Cabella on loan for the season from Newcastle with an obligation to make the deal permanent if unspecified conditions are met.

Steve McClaren was assured of significant investment in the squad by owner Mike Ashley when he accepted the manager's job in June after Newcastle came close to being relegated the previous month.

After opening the season by drawing with Southampton, a 2-0 loss to Swansea illustrated Newcastle's need for reinforcements.

Newcastle has signed Thauvin in a bid to inject pace into the team and create a fresh supply line for strikers Papiss Cisse and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
