Newcastle lose as Wigan win

Patrick Kisnorbo put Leeds ahead against Newcastle at Elland Road before the Premier League side levelled 10 minutes before the break when Steven Taylor nodded home a corner at the far post. Lloyd Sam restored the home advantage by firing in from a tight angle in the second half but levelled for the second time in the game when Haris Vuckic scored. But Leeds were not to be denied a deserved victory as Paynter struck home his first goal of the pre-season campaign. Wigan, meanwhile, cruised to a comfortable 3-1 victory over Preston at Deepdale. Latics took just 30 seconds to open the scoring as James McCarthy fired home after Preston failed to clear Mohamed Diame's cross from the left. Wigan doubled their lead on 10 minutes when Victor Moses' hopeful shot was deflected past goalkeeper IainTurner as the visitors threatened to run riot. Preston, to their credit, refused to lose heart and they pulled a goal back midway through the first half when Amine Linganzi turned his man and struck with a sweet volley. But just as North End were starting to get into their stride, Wigan knocked them out of it as Emmerson Boyce headed home to restore their two-goal cushion.
