Narrow win for Twente in Shield

Marc Janko put the Enschede club - last season's KNVB Beker winners - ahead from the penalty spot after 20 minutes after former Twente man Theo Janssen fouled his old team-mate Luuk de Jong in the box. Eredivisie champions Ajax drew level through Toby Alderweireld in the 54th minute, seven minutes after Twente were reduced to 10 men by the dismissal of Steven Berghuis, who was shown a second yellow card for diving in the box. However, Bryan Ruiz sealed the win for Twente with an excellent individual effort midway through the second period. Ajax were the first to threaten in the eighth minute as Miralem Sulejmani's effort was parried by Nikolay Mihailov as far as Christian Eriksen, but the Dane could only head the rebound against the post and Peter Wisgerhof cleared. Janssen handed his former team a golden chance to go ahead with his trip on De Jong and Austrian forward Janko made no mistake with a low effort. Mihailov then made a double save to keep a clean sheet through to half-time, first keeping out a Janssen drive which he fumbled into the path of Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, but he managed to recover his ground to divert his close-range effort around the post. Berghuis' dismissal was the first incident of note in the second period and Ajax equalised when Gregory van der Wiel teed up Alderweireld, who lashed in a shot which crossed the line via the crossbar. Ruiz hit a tremendous winner in the 68th minute, cutting inside onto his left foot and curling in a shot from 20 yards which gave Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer no chance.
