MLS will have a first-time champion in 2016

There are still three teams left in the hunt for MLS Cup, with the Seattle Sounders into the final from the Western Conference and either Toronto FC or the Montreal Impact set to represent the East. But no matter what, MLS is assured of having a first-time champion this season.

The Sounders have never won MLS Cup before. In fact, they had never made it to the final until beating the Colorado Rapids on Sunday. The Rapids were the lone team in the final four who had a Cup under their belts so as soon as they went down, it was a guarantee that whoever took home the title would be doing so for the first time.

Like the Sounders, Toronto FC and the Impact have never even played in the final before. Neither had even been to the Eastern Conference final before this season. Montreal hold a 3-2 lead on Toronto after the first leg, but with the Reds returning home for the second leg, they have to feel good about their chances to turn things around and book a spot in the final.
